Thomas Crossley is currently a Professor of Economics at the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), on leave from the University of Essex (UK). He gained his PhD at McMaster University (Canada), and has held faculty appointments at York University (Canada), the Australian National University, McMaster University, University of Cambridge (UK), and Koç University (Turkey). Tom is an Associate Director of Understanding Society (the UK Household Longitudinal Study). He is also a Fellow of the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) and member of the ONS Economic Experts Working Group, a Research Fellow of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a Research Associate of the Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence, and an elected member of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth. Tom currently serves on the editorial board of the Review of Income and Wealth. He attended the IARIW General Conferences in 2016 and 2018, organizing a session at the latter, and in 2016 he served on the adjudication panel for the John W. Kendrick Prize.
Tom’s research interests include household behaviour, financial security, and living standards; the design, collection and analysis of survey data; and economic measurement more broadly. His work has published widely in top journals including Journal of Political Economy, Economic Journal, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Economic Perspectives, and Review of Income and Wealth. In 2016 he and his co-authors were awarded the Atkinson Award for the best paper published in Journal of Public Economics over the three-year window 2014-2016.
