Chihiro Shimizu, Hitosubashi University
Chihiro Shimizu is a Professor in the Graduate School of Social Data Science, the Faculty of Social Data Science, and the Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study and Director of the Center for Urban and Real Estate Studies at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan. He previously worked as a researcher at the Japan Real Estate Institute (1992-2000), Chief Researcher at the Institute of Housing Studies, Recruit (2000-2005), and Associate Professor and Professor at Reitaku University (2005-2025). He has a broad range of research interests including real estate economics, index number theory, economic measurement, productivity, price indices, Big Data analysis, and sports data science. He has published numerous articles in Empirical Economics, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Housing Economics, Landscape and Urban Planning, Real Estate Economics, Review of Income and Wealth, and other academic journals, and he has also published a number of research monographs, the most well-known of which is Property Price Indexes (Advances in Japanese Business and Economics Series), which was co-authored with W. Erwin Diewert, Kiyohiko Nishimura, and Tsutomu Watanabe and published by Springer in 2020. He has been an active member of both the NBER Conference on Research in Income and Wealth (CRIW) and the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW) for many years, and he organized the IARIW-Hitotsubashi University Special Conference on “Population Ageing: Implications for Economic Measurement and Economic Performance” which was held in Tokyo, Japan, on March 24-25, 2025, He is one of the Guest Editors of the special issue of the Review of Income and Wealth that is based on this conference, and he is currently a co-opted member of the IARIW Council. He graduated from Nihon University with a major in economics in 1990 and received a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of Tokyo in 2008.
