Subject: Program for 36th IARIW General Conference and Update on IARIW Activities

36th General Conference

The 120 papers for the program for the 36th IARIW General Conference are now posted at https://iariw.org/36th-annual-virtual-general-conference-preliminary-program/. The conference will take place virtually August 23-26 from 2 PM to 7:30 PM CEST, with Statistics Norway hosting the conference platform. Members wanting to keep abreast of the latest research in income and wealth issues are encouraged to read the papers posted with the program.

The opening plenary session on August 23, organized by Statistics Norway, is on the economic and social consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. A second plenary that day presents new developments in economic measurement. After these two plenary sessions, Katharine Abraham from the University of Maryland and former Commissioner of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics will present the Ruggles Lecture entitled “Big Data for 21st Century Economic Statistics.” It is not too late to register for the conference at https://egencia.qondor.com/ParticipantWeb/Registration/102560.

Members Meeting

The IARIW will be holding its members meeting virtually on Friday, August 27 at 2 PM CEST. The agenda for the meeting can be found here. The minutes of the last members meeting on August 22, 2018 are posted at https://iariw.org/membership/minutes-of-the-members-meeting/. All IARIW members will be sent shortly a Zoom link to access the meeting.

Proposals for 37th IARIW General Conference

The 37th IARIW General Conference, to be hosted by the national statistical office of Luxembourg (STATEC), will be held in person in Luxembourg August 22-28, 2022. Members are invited to send proposals for topics for theme sessions at this conference to Andrew at info@iariw.org by 10 PM CEST on Thursday, August 26. These proposals will then be presented and voted on at the members meeting on August 27. The IARIW Council will use the results of the voting to develop the program for the General Conference.

IARIW- ESCoE Special Conference on Intangible Capital 

With the easing of restrictions on international travel to the UK, the IARIW, in partnership with the UK Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE), will go ahead with a special conference “Measuring Intangible Assets and Their Contributions to Growth” to be held in person in London, England November 11-12, 2021. The keynote speakers are Jonathan Haskel from Imperial College and Dan Sichel from Wellesley College. The conference program is posted at https://iariw.org/Program-IARIW-ESCoE-2021/Information. Information on registration will be posted on the IARIW website as soon as available and sent to the membership in early September.

IARIW-TNBS Conference on Income, Wealth and Well-being in Africa

The IARIW, in partnership with the Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics, is organizing a conference entitled “Measuring Income, Wealth and Well-being in Africa” to take place April 14-16, 2022 in Arusha, Tanzania. The preliminary program for the conference is posted at https://iariw.org/iariw-tnbs-conference-program/.

Congratulations to Marshall Reinsdorf and Ron Jarmin for Shiskin Award

Congratulations to IARIW Past President Marshall Reinsdorf and US Bureau of Census Acting Director and IARIW Member Ron Jarmin, co-recipients of the 2021 Julius Shiskin Memorial Award for Economic Statistics. The award is given in recognition of unusually original and important contributions in the development of economic statistics or in the use of statistics in interpreting the economy. Details of the contributions of the two winners to economic statistics can be found here.
